The 24-form is the standard popular set of Tai Chi Chuan in mainland China and most of the world. It was compiled in 1956 by the Chinese National Physical Education Committee, based on the traditional Yang-style 108-form, with the goal of making Tai Chi accessible to ordinary people during the new nation's reconstruction era.
Why 24 postures?
- Easy to memorize: 24 instead of 108 — beginners can learn the set in 3-6 months of regular practice
- Deep enough: Still contains all basic movement groups (beginning, one-side arms, bend/stand, big steps, ending)
- Widely taught: Available in most clubs, parks, health centers
- Scientifically studied: Most studied set in sports-medicine research (because it is easy to standardize)
