24-Form — Group 3: Single Whip, Cloud Hands, High Pat on Horse

Group 3 transitions to continuous hip rotation and hands following circular paths — this is where Tai Chi clearly differs from other martial arts.

Posture 9: Single Whip (單鞭)

Description

Weight on left leg. Right hand opens to shoulder height with palm facing outward (fingers held together like a hook). Left hand presses down at abdomen. Right foot opens to the side in an arc.

Subtle points

  • Right hand like a "hook": Fingers held together, palm facing outward — like hanging a heavy weight. This is how Tai Chi suspends force.
  • Eyes look toward right hand: Intention follows eyes, eyes follow hand
  • Two hands opposite: Up (right) - Down (left), Yang - Yin
  • Hips rotate 45 degrees: Hips rotate in the direction of the right hand

Common mistakes

  • Right hand opens but fingers use force (not relaxed)
  • Left hand presses too low (shoulder tilts)
  • Hips don't rotate, body still turns with shoulders
  • Eyes look down

Application

Single Whip is the first posture teaching suspending force instead of pushing force — this is the key to internal practice. Also trains hips rotate independently from shoulders — something 90% of beginners can't do.

Posture 10: Cloud Hands (雲手)

Frequency in the 24-form

Cloud Hands appears 3 times — after Single Whip, after High Pat on Horse, and after Left Heel Kick. This is the most-frequent posture in the group.

Description

Right hand raises high (in front of forehead). Left hand presses down low (in front of hip). Then right hand arcs down and to the left, left hand arcs up and to the right — moving like drifting clouds. Center shifts from one leg to the other in rhythm.

Subtle points

  • Hands follow circles: Both hands move on two horizontal circles (not straight lines)
  • Two hands same direction but opposite paths: Right hand down-left, left hand up-right — symmetric
  • Center shifts smoothly: Stand still when hands are up/down, shift center when hands are moving sideways
  • Eyes always look at the hand that is up

Common mistakes

  • Hands moving on straight horizontal lines (no arc)
  • Both hands up and down together (lose symmetry)
  • Center shifting continuously (lose pause points)
  • Shoulders and elbows stiff

Application

Cloud Hands is advanced hip rotation training. Hips must rotate continuously but smoothly. It also trains intention follows hand at a high level — excellent for focus training.

Posture 11: High Pat on Horse (左右高探馬)

Description

Right foot steps forward. Right hand raises to shoulder height with palm facing down (like "touching" something above). Left hand at front of abdomen. Eyes look toward right hand.

Subtle points

  • "Horse rider" image: Posture tall, head held up, eyes looking far — like a rider on horseback scouting the road
  • Right hand "touches lightly": Not pushing, not pressing — just touching, like finding the way
  • Weight on back leg: Front leg is just a "support," back leg carries the weight

Common mistakes

  • Right hand pushes strongly (uses shoulder force)
  • Weight on front leg (lose balance)
  • Body leaning forward
  • Left hand in wrong position

Application

High Pat on Horse trains intention goes first, force follows — the hand is only a "finger finding the way," real force is still in the back leg. This is a subtle application of "intention leads qi, qi leads body."

How to practice Group 3

  1. Practice Single Whip first — when familiar, the other postures are easier
  2. Practice Cloud Hands slowly, counting beats — count 1-2-3-4 for each hand passing through 4 corners
  3. High Pat on Horse can be practiced as a daily warm-up

Core principle of Group 3

Group 3 trains silk-reeling energy (spiral force) at a conscious level: - Single Whip: spirals once then stops - Cloud Hands: spirals continuously - High Pat on Horse: spirals lightly, finds the way

When practicing this group, imagine force flowing from the feet, through the hips, out the hands like a stream of water.
