Tennis Research Project โ€” Master Performance System

A 12-chapter synthesis covering biomechanics, physiology, the inner game, and tactical execution. The central thread running through every chapter is the same: power flows from the ground through the kinetic chain to the racket โ€” and any break in that chain forces the arm to compensate, causing both performance failure and injury.

The Unifying Principle

The arm is not the engine. It is the whip.

The engine is the interaction between the feet and the court. Every major fault described in this system โ€” Arming, the Noodle Core, the Hips-First Failure, the Late Lunge โ€” is a variation of the same break: energy that was supposed to travel from the ground through the chain is instead generated by the arm alone, producing weak shots and overuse injury.

Mastery is the progressive elimination of these breaks until the Sequential Transfer fires automatically โ€” what the Inner Game framework calls the shift from making it happen to letting it happen.

Concept Map

Biomechanics & The Kinetic Chain

  • Arming โ€” the primary forehand and serve fault; racket accelerates before hips clear
  • Arming Ratio โ€” the diagnostic: does the hand pass the back hip before the navel faces the net?
  • Kinetic Chain โ€” proximal-to-distal power sequence from feet to racket (cross-link: aggressive.md vault)
  • Stretch-Shortening Cycle โ€” the rubber-band mechanism; Amortization Phase as the critical danger zone
  • Ground Reaction Forces โ€” Newton's Third Law as the power source; GRF as the engine
  • Leg Drive โ€” the foundational GRF application; absent leg drive = forced Arming
  • X-Factor โ€” shoulder-hip separation torque multiplier (cross-link: aggressive.md vault)
  • Linear vs Angular Momentum โ€” forward drive (neutral stance) vs. rotational torque (open stance)

The Volley System

The Inner Game

  • Self 1 vs Self 2 โ€” the Conscious Ego (Teller) vs. the Unconscious Body (Doer)
  • Petit Bras โ€” the physical expression of Self 1 interference; short-arming under pressure
  • Flow State โ€” the zone of relaxed concentration; characteristics and entry conditions
  • Bounce-Hit Technique โ€” the auditory anchor that occupies Self 1 and frees Self 2
  • Between-Point Ritual โ€” the 4-stage psychological reset between points
  • Quiet Eye โ€” visual anchoring technique that silences analytical noise
  • Non-Judgmental Observation โ€” observing data rather than labelling failure
