Bounce-Hit Technique¶
The Bounce-Hit Technique is a rhythmic and auditory anchoring exercise in which the player says "bounce" at the moment the ball strikes the court and "hit" at the moment of racket contact. It is one of the most practical tools for achieving Relaxed Concentration and keeping Self 1 locked in the present moment.
The Protocol¶
- At the exact moment the ball strikes the court surface: say (aloud or internally) "bounce"
- At the precise moment of racket-ball contact: say "hit"
- Maintain this through every rally ball
The timing must be precise — the word coincides exactly with the physical event, not before or after.
Psychological Benefit¶
The technique structurally prevents Self 1 from drifting. It is impossible to say "bounce" while dwelling on an error from three points ago, and impossible to say "hit" while obsessing over the final score of the set. Each word requires full present-moment attention to register.
This is the Non-Judgmental Observation principle made automatic: the mind is given two factual, sensory anchors that crowd out evaluative thought.
Physical Benefit¶
Beyond psychology, the technique has direct physical effects: - Synchronizes breathing with the rhythm of play - Prevents rushing the stroke — a common symptom of Self 1 interference and anxiety - Establishes rhythm that Self 2 can use as a timing reference for the swing
The rhythmic quality is important: tension in the body and rushing in the stroke often co-arise. A player who is saying "bounce...hit" at their natural rhythm cannot simultaneously be rushing.
Relationship to Quiet Eye¶
Quiet Eye provides the visual anchor; Bounce-Hit provides the auditory anchor. Together they address two sensory channels, leaving minimal bandwidth for Self 1's analytical or critical functions.
Use Cases¶
- High-pressure points: implementing Bounce-Hit on break points or set points gives Self 1 a job that prevents anxiety from escalating
- After errors: immediately returning to "bounce-hit" rhythm cuts off the judgment spiral before it begins
- Rally practice: using it as a default during drilling trains the habit so it is available automatically under match pressure
