Petit Bras

Petit Bras (French: "short arm") is the physical manifestation of Neural Reversion under competitive pressure — the racket decelerates through the contact zone, the grip tightens, the kinetic chain shortens to the arm alone, and the shot collapses. It is the body's visible expression of the Amygdala Hijack sequence.

The term names the physical result of choking; the neurological cause is the forced return of control from the Basal Ganglia to the Prefrontal Cortex.

What Happens

When the amygdala activates fight-or-flight, the brain distrusts its automated motor programs. The implicit kinetic chain — which normally fires from the ground up through proximal-to-distal sequencing — is interrupted. The PFC attempts to consciously "steer" the ball. The muscles tighten. The arm decelerates to maintain control. The wrist locks prematurely (destroying the stretch-shortening cycle). The racket face angle is managed consciously rather than delivered automatically.

The result is a stroke that is mechanically identifiable: compact backswing collapses further, contact occurs late, pace drops drastically, and the ball often floats with no depth or spin.

It Is the Brain Protecting the Body

Petit Bras is not a technical flaw or a mental weakness — it is the brain's biological survival mechanism functioning as designed. The amygdala perceives threat (match pressure, identity risk) and responds by tightening muscles and reducing explosive movement to protect the body from perceived danger. The performance cost is simply an acceptable trade-off the survival system doesn't know how to avoid.

Recognition and Response

Early warning signs identified in the source material: - "Death grip" — grip pressure exceeds functional level before or at contact - Rapid, uncontrolled eye movements — visual system becoming reactive rather than predictive - Forearm and shoulder tension rising before the swing begins

Response: Thalamic Automaticity (pre-point ritual to hand control back to the implicit system), parasympathetic breathing (vagal activation to suppress sympathetic arousal), and awareness that recognizes the first signs before full Petit Bras develops.
