Foundation Level¶
This is where every Tai Chi journey begins — and where masters return to throughout their practice.
Why Start Here?¶
Foundation material covers the non-negotiable basics: posture, alignment, weight transfer, breathing, and the fundamental movement patterns. These aren't "beginner topics" you graduate from — they're the ground you stand on for everything that follows.
I get asked all the time: "I've been practicing for 5 years, do I still need to review basics?" The answer is always yes. Not because you're doing it wrong, but because basics reveal new layers as your body learns to feel them.
What's in This Section¶
Basics¶
Core fundamentals taught through simple, repeatable exercises: - Stance and posture (Wuji, Bow stance, Cat stance) - Weight transfer and stepping - Hand forms and basic arm positions - Breathing coordination - Single movements (Grasp Bird's Tail, Wave Hands Like Clouds, etc.)
Deep Dives¶
Focused exploration of specific foundation topics: - The 10 Essentials of Tai Chi (detailed breakdown) - Yang Cheng Fu's principles - Common mistakes and how to fix them - Biomechanics of Tai Chi movement - Building a daily practice routine
How to Approach This Material¶
Don't rush. Foundation is not a checkbox. Spend weeks or months here, not days.
Film yourself. What you think you're doing and what you're actually doing are often different. Phone camera, 30 seconds, compare to the video.
One thing at a time. Don't try to fix posture, breathing, and weight transfer in the same session. Pick one focus per practice.
Return often. Even when you move to Advanced material, come back to Foundation videos monthly. You'll catch things you missed.
