It's the most common question people ask when they first see Tai Chi. And it reveals a fundamental misunderstanding about what power really is.
In our modern world, we equate power with speed and muscle. The faster you move, the more force you generate. The bigger your muscles, the harder you hit. This is the model of external power — and it works brilliantly for most activities. Sprinting, jumping, throwing, punching: all benefit from explosive muscle contraction and fast twitch fibers.
But Tai Chi operates on a different model entirely. It's not trying to optimize the same thing faster or stronger. It's optimizing something else: whole-body coordination, structure, and the ability to transmit force without losing it to tension.
This article explores the core distinction between internal and external power — not as abstract philosophy, but as testable, physical mechanics you can feel and verify.
External Power: How Most Martial Arts Work¶
To understand internal power, first understand what it's not.
The External Model¶
External martial arts (Boxing, Karate, Taekwondo, Muay Thai) generate power through:
- Muscle contraction — Power comes from muscles shortening rapidly
- Speed — The faster the contraction, the more force (F = ma)

This model is highly effective. A well-trained boxer can generate thousands of pounds of force in a punch. The mechanics are well understood and measurable.
The Limitations of External Power¶
Despite its effectiveness, external power has inherent limitations:
1. It declines with age. Muscle mass and fast-twitch fiber capability decrease naturally after age 30. No amount of training completely stops this decline.
2. It requires tension. To generate maximum power, you must tense at impact. Tension, however, slows you down and telegraphs your intention. An opponent can see and feel you "loading up."
3. It's locally generated. Power comes from specific muscle groups (legs, hips, shoulders) working in sequence. If one link in the chain is weak or disconnected, power is lost.
4. It meets force with force. When an external artist blocks, they use muscle to stop the incoming force. This creates a contest: whoever is stronger or faster wins.
5. It's exhausting. Generating explosive power repeatedly consumes enormous energy. In a prolonged conflict, endurance becomes a limiting factor.
These limitations aren't flaws — they're trade-offs. External power optimizes for explosive, short-duration output. For many contexts (sports, self-defense scenarios lasting seconds), this is exactly what you want.
But Tai Chi is optimizing for something different.
Internal Power: The Tai Chi Model¶
Internal power (often called "Jin" 勁 in Chinese, distinguished from "Li" 力, which means brute muscle force) operates on fundamentally different principles.
The Internal Model¶
Internal power generates force through:
- Structure, not contraction — Power comes from aligning bones and connective tissue so force transmits efficiently, not from muscles shortening
- Ground connection — Power originates from the legs pushing into the earth, transmitted through the body to the point of contact
- Relaxation (Song, 鬆) — Muscles are relaxed, not tense, allowing force to flow without obstruction
- Whole-body unity — The entire body moves as one connected unit, not as separate parts sequencing
- Yielding and redirecting — Instead of meeting force directly, you redirect it, using the opponent's energy against them
This model produces a very different quality of power. It's not explosive in the external sense — it's more like a heavy wave, or a train moving forward. Slow to start, but massive and difficult to stop once in motion.
The Physics of Internal Power¶
Internal power isn't mystical — it's biomechanics optimized for a specific type of force transmission.
The Kinetic Chain: In external power, the kinetic chain is a sequence: legs push, hips rotate, shoulder extends, elbow straightens, fist impacts. Each segment adds velocity (like cracking a whip).
In internal power, the kinetic chain is a unified structure: legs, hips, spine, shoulders, and arms move together as one unit. There's no sequencing — everything moves simultaneously. This sacrifices peak velocity but gains mass behind the movement.
Ground Reaction Force: Both external and internal power use ground reaction force (pushing into the earth to generate opposing force). But external arts use it to initiate a chain of movements, while internal arts maintain continuous contact with the ground, using it as a constant source of power.
Tensegrity Structure: Internal power relies on what architects call "tensegrity" — a balance of tension and compression elements that creates a stable yet flexible structure. Your bones are the compression elements; your connective tissue (fascia, tendons, ligaments) provides the tension. When aligned correctly, this structure can transmit force with minimal muscle involvement.
Feeling the Difference: Practical Experiments¶
Understanding intellectually is different from feeling physically. Try these experiments with a partner.
Experiment 1: The Push Test¶
Setup: Stand facing a partner. Place your palms against their chest. Ask them to push back.
External approach: Tense your arms, shoulders, and chest. Push as hard as you can with muscle strength.
Internal approach: Relax your arms completely. Sink your weight into your legs. Imagine your arms are wooden beams connecting your torso to your partner's chest. Push by driving from your legs, transmitting force through your relaxed arms into your partner.

Internal approach: Drop straight down by bending your knees (don't jump), landing with knees still bent, feeling your weight sink into the earth.

This seems backwards. How can being relaxed make you stronger?
What Song Is (and Isn't)¶
Song (鬆) is often translated as "relaxation," but that's misleading. It doesn't mean limp or collapsed. A better translation might be "active relaxation" or "supple alertness."
Song is NOT: - Limp or floppy - Unconscious or sleepy - Collapsed structure - Lack of engagement
Song IS: - Freedom from unnecessary tension - Connected structure without rigidity - Alert, alive presence - Muscles ready but not contracted - Joints open and mobile
Why Tension Is the Enemy¶
Tension blocks power transmission in several ways:
1. Tension isolates muscle groups. When you tense your shoulder, you disconnect your arm from your torso. Power from your legs can't reach your hand if your shoulder is locked.
2. Tension slows movement. Co-contracting opposing muscle groups (e.g., biceps and triceps both tensing) creates internal resistance. You're fighting yourself.
3. Tension telegraphs intention. When you "load up" a punch by tensing, your opponent can feel and see it coming. Relaxed movement is invisible until it lands.
4. Tension fatigue is rapid. Sustained muscle contraction consumes energy and produces lactic acid. Relaxed structure can be maintained indefinitely.
5. Tension reduces sensitivity. A tense arm can't feel subtle changes in pressure. A relaxed arm can detect the slightest shift in your partner's force, allowing you to respond appropriately.
Developing Song: Practical Steps¶
Song is not something you achieve once — it's a continuous practice. Here's how to develop it:
Step 1: Body Scan Stand in Wu Chi posture (feet shoulder-width, arms at sides, knees slightly bent). Close your eyes. Scan your body from head to toe, noticing areas of tension. Common culprits: jaw, shoulders, hips, knees. Consciously release each area.
Step 2: Pendulum Arms Stand relaxed. Let your arms hang completely limp. Gently rotate your waist left and right, letting your arms swing like pendulums. They should move from waist rotation, not arm muscle. This teaches your arms to be "hung" from your shoulders, not held up by tension.
Step 3: Partner Pressure Have a partner gently push on various parts of your body (shoulder, arm, back). Your task: stay completely relaxed while maintaining your structure. If you're pushed, don't resist — redirect by shifting weight or rotating waist. This trains you to maintain Song under pressure.
Step 4: Form Practice Practice your Tai Chi form with the intention of using zero muscle tension in your arms. Move them only with waist rotation and weight shifts. If your arms feel heavy and "alive," you're on track. If they feel light and disconnected, you're probably tensing somewhere.
The Role of Structure (Peng, 掤)¶
If Song is the absence of unnecessary tension, Peng is the presence of optimal structure.
What Peng Is¶
Peng (掤) is often translated as "ward-off energy," but like Song, this is misleading. Peng is not a technique — it's a quality of structure.
Imagine a bicycle wheel: the rim is your outer body (skin, muscles), the hub is your center (Dantian, spine), and the spokes are your connective tissue (fascia, tendons). When properly tensioned, the spokes create a structure that's both strong and flexible. Press on the rim, and the entire wheel supports the load, not just one spoke.
Peng is your body maintaining this wheel-like structure. Expanded, connected, alive. Not collapsed (loose spokes), not rigid (over-tightened spokes that snap).
Peng vs. Tension¶
This is crucial: Peng is not tension. Tension is local muscle contraction. Peng is systemic structural integrity.
Tension: - Created by muscle contraction - Localized (can be in one area) - Fatigues quickly - Blocks force transmission - Feels hard to the touch
Peng: - Created by alignment and connective tissue engagement - Systemic (whole body connected) - Can be maintained indefinitely - Transmits force efficiently - Feels expansive and springy to the touch
Developing Peng: Practical Steps¶
Step 1: The Balloon Visualization Stand in Wu Chi posture. Imagine a large balloon inside your torso, gently expanding in all directions. It's pushing your ribs slightly apart, your spine slightly up, your shoulders slightly out. Not forcing — just gently expanding. Maintain this feeling as you move.
Step 2: Partner Test Have a partner push gently on your forearm while you hold it in front of you (as in Ward Off). Don't push back with your arm. Instead: - Sink your weight into your legs - Imagine your arm is a steel beam connected to your hip - Rotate your waist slightly, redirecting their force
If Peng is present, your partner will feel like they're pushing against your whole body, not just your arm. Your arm won't collapse, but it also won't be tense.
Step 3: Form Integration As you practice your form, ask: "Am I maintaining Peng throughout?" Common breakdown points: - Arms collapsing at the elbow - Shoulders rising toward ears - Chest collapsing or over-expanding - Lower back arching or tucking excessively
Peng should feel like your body is gently expanding in all directions, like the balloon, throughout the entire form.
The Martial Implications¶
Why does this distinction matter for fighting?
External Fighting Strategy¶
External arts typically follow this strategy: 1. Close distance quickly 2. Deliver explosive strikes to vulnerable targets 3. Overwhelm opponent with speed and power 4. End the fight quickly (seconds to a minute)
This strategy is highly effective when it works. But if the fight extends beyond the initial burst, or if the opponent is equally skilled in external methods, the contest becomes largely about who is younger, stronger, or faster.
Internal Fighting Strategy¶
Internal arts follow a different strategy: 1. Maintain optimal distance (not too close, not too far) 2. Stick to opponent's limbs (maintain contact, feel their intention) 3. Yield to their force, redirect it, let them overcommit 4. When they're off-balance or empty, fill the gap with whole-body power 5. Repeat until opponent is controlled or exhausted
This strategy doesn't rely on being faster or stronger. It relies on being more sensitive, better structured, and more patient.
The "Four Ounces Deflects a Thousand Pounds" Principle¶
This famous Tai Chi saying is not hyperbole — it describes the actual mechanics of internal power.
Picture a revolving door. A child can rotate a heavy revolving door with minimal effort because the door is balanced on a central pivot. The child isn't lifting the door's weight — they're applying force at the right place, in the right direction, at the right time.
Similarly, in Tai Chi fighting, you're not opposing the opponent's full force. You're finding their "pivot point" — the place where a small force applied at the right angle redirects their entire momentum.
This requires: - Sensitivity to feel where their force is going - Timing to apply force when they're committed - Structure to maintain your own balance while redirecting theirs - Patience to wait for the opportunity rather than forcing it
These are internal qualities, not external ones. They don't decline with age — they improve with practice.
Training Methods for Internal Power¶
Internal power isn't something you're born with — it's something you develop through specific training methods.
Standing Meditation (Zhan Zhuang, 站樁)¶
What it is: Standing in various postures for extended periods (5 minutes to an hour), maintaining Song and Peng.
Why it works: Standing meditation develops: - Leg strength and endurance (the foundation of internal power) - Awareness of tension patterns (you quickly learn where you're holding unnecessarily) - Peng structure (maintaining expanded posture under fatigue) - Mental focus and body awareness

Form Practice (Quan, 拳)¶
What it is: Practicing the Tai Chi form slowly, with attention to internal mechanics.

Key point: Slow practice is not about moving slowly — it's about maintaining internal awareness throughout the movement. Speed is irrelevant; awareness is everything.
Push Hands (Tui Shou, 推手)¶
What it is: A two-person exercise where you maintain contact with your partner's arms and try to unbalance each other while maintaining your own balance.
Why it works: Push hands develops: - Sensitivity to external force (feeling opponent's intention) - Application of Song and Peng under pressure - Timing and distance management - Ability to yield and redirect without collapsing
Common mistake: Many practitioners turn push hands into a wrestling match, using strength to push and pull. This defeats the purpose. Push hands should be slow and sensitive, focused on feeling and redirecting, not overpowering.
Silk Reeling (Chan Si Gong, 纏絲功)¶
What it is: Spiraling, circular movements that train the body to move as a unified whole with continuous, connected power.
Why it works: Silk reeling develops: - Whole-body coordination (every part moves with every other part) - Spiral power (the corkscrew quality of internal force) - Continuous movement (no starts or stops, one motion flows into the next) - Connection between upper and lower body
How to practice: Basic silk reeling involves standing with knees bent, rotating your waist while letting your arms follow in spiral patterns. The movement originates from the waist and legs, not the arms.
Common Misconceptions¶
"Internal Power Is Mystical"¶
No. Internal power is biomechanics, not magic. It's about optimal structure, coordination, and force transmission — all physically measurable phenomena.
The "mystical" reputation comes from: 1. Poor teaching — instructors using vague, mystical language instead of clear mechanical explanations 2. Invisible mechanics — internal power happens inside the body, where it's hard to see 3. Counterintuitive results — a small, relaxed person moving a large, tense person seems impossible until you understand the mechanics
"You Can't Use Internal Power in a Real Fight"¶
This is partially true — and completely missing the point.
True: In a high-adrenaline, chaotic street confrontation, most people (even trained martial artists) revert to gross motor patterns and tension. Fine sensitivity and subtle redirection are difficult under extreme stress.
Missing the point: Internal power training isn't primarily about preparing for street fights. It's about: - Developing body awareness and control - Learning to move efficiently without injury - Cultivating patience and sensitivity - Maintaining physical capability into old age
These benefits are real and valuable, regardless of fighting applicability.
That said, internal power can be applied in conflict — but it requires extensive training under pressure (push hands, sparring, scenario training) to develop the sensitivity and timing needed. It's not something you pick up in a few months.
"Internal Is Better Than External"¶
No. They're different tools for different jobs.
External power excels at: - Explosive, short-duration output - Athletic performance (jumping, sprinting, throwing) - Quick neutralization of threats - Building muscle and bone density
Internal power excels at: - Sustained, efficient movement - Injury prevention and recovery - Maintaining capability into old age - Sensitivity and timing development
The best martial artists often integrate both. External power without internal understanding becomes rigid and exhaustible. Internal power without external conditioning becomes impractical and weak.
"Just Relax and You'll Have Internal Power"¶
This is the most dangerous misconception.
Song (relaxation) is necessary but not sufficient. You also need: - Structure (Peng) — relaxation without structure is just collapse - Leg strength — internal power originates from the legs - Coordination — whole-body unity doesn't happen automatically - Sensitivity — developed through partner practice - Timing — learned through application
"Just relax" is like telling someone to "just swim" — technically correct, but not helpful without specific methods.
The Health Benefits: Why This Matters Beyond Fighting¶
Even if you never intend to use Tai Chi for self-defense, understanding internal vs. external power has profound health implications.
Tension and Chronic Pain¶
Most chronic pain (back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint pain) is caused or exacerbated by chronic muscle tension. Your body is designed to move with alternating tension and relaxation. When muscles are chronically tense, they: - Compress joints, causing wear - Restrict blood flow, causing fatigue and pain - Pull on bones, causing misalignment - Compress nerves, causing pain and numbness
Internal power training teaches you to identify and release unnecessary tension, directly addressing these issues.
Structure and Posture¶
Poor posture (slumped shoulders, forward head, collapsed chest) is a structural problem. It's not just "standing up straight" — it's about aligning your skeleton so your weight is supported efficiently, not held up by muscle tension.
Peng training develops this alignment. As your structure improves, posture becomes effortless, not a constant struggle of "shoulders back, chin up."
Movement and Aging¶
External power declines with age. Internal power, however, can improve well into old age. There are 80- and 90-year-old Tai Chi practitioners who move with grace, power, and balance that 30-year-olds can't match.
Why? Because internal power relies on: - Connective tissue health (which can be maintained with use) - Neurological coordination (which improves with practice) - Structural alignment (which can be refined indefinitely) - Sensitivity and timing (which sharpen with experience)
None of these require youthful muscle fibers or fast-twitch capability.
Stress and the Nervous System¶
Chronic tension is both a symptom and a cause of chronic stress. Your nervous system gets stuck in a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) pattern, keeping muscles tense, heart rate elevated, and stress hormones flowing.
Song training activates the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system. As you learn to release tension on command, your stress response becomes more balanced. This has downstream effects on sleep, digestion, immunity, and mental health.
Final Reflection: Power Redefined¶
In the external model, power is domination — overcoming resistance through superior force.
In the internal model, power is harmony — finding the position where resistance dissolves, where force flows through you without obstruction, where you're strong not because you're tense, but because you're connected.
This isn't just a martial distinction — it's a philosophical one. How you understand power in your body reflects how you understand power in your life.
Do you meet obstacles with force, trying to overcome them? Or do you find the path of least resistance, working with circumstances rather than against them?
Do you rely on tension and effort, burning yourself out? Or do you cultivate structure and relaxation, sustaining yourself for the long term?
Do you prioritize speed and explosiveness, or depth and continuity?
Tai Chi doesn't give you answers to these questions. It gives you a physical laboratory to explore them. Every movement is an experiment in power, tension, structure, and flow. Every push hands session is a lesson in yielding, timing, and balance.
The distinction between internal and external power is not just about how you fight. It's about how you live.
