P - Proprioception

Can I feel the stretch?

The Principle

4 milliseconds. That's the ball dwell time on strings.

Your palm fascia feels: face angle, spin, pressure, impact location — in 4ms.

No vision. Pure feel.

The Receptors

Receptor Location Detects Timing
Ruffini Joint capsules, skin Stretch, joint angle Continuous
Pacinian Deep fascia, joints Vibration, rapid change <10ms
Muscle spindle Muscle belly Length, velocity 20-50ms
Golgi tendon Tendon junction Force, tension 50-100ms

The Feeling Scale

Tension Feeling Use
1-2/10 Barely there Ready position
3/10 Aware of racket Takeback, drop
4-5/10 Clear stretch Loading phase
6-7/10 Strong stretch Pre-contact
6-7/10 Firm at contact Contact (30ms)
3/10 Release Follow-through

The Feeling Checkpoints

Phase Feel For
Ready Racket weight in palm, face angle
Takeback Oblique stretch, spiral line loading
Drop Wrist lays back, forearm stretch
Swing Chest pull, oblique fire
Contact Palm pressure spike (6-7/10)
Release Instant drop to 3/10

The Drill

"Eyes Closed Contact"

  1. Partner feeds easy balls
  2. Close eyes at bounce
  3. Track purely by feel: where's the face? where's the ball?
  4. Call out: "Forehand/Backhand, Clean/Off-center, Face open/closed"
  5. 20 balls, track accuracy

Goal: 80%+ correct feel calls.

The Cue

"Feel the face. Feel the stretch. Feel the spike."
