8 - Figure-8 Regulation

The Power Regulator.

The Principle

You don't change your swing for power. You change the size and speed of the 8.

Two 8s, Two Strokes

Forehand Push: Horizontal 8

    Entry (back & out)
Crossover (drop inside) ← Amortization = here
Exit (push forward) → Brake → Pulse
  • Entry: Racket back & out, chest opens
  • Crossover: Racket drops inside, butt cap at ball
  • Exit: Push forward through ball

Backhand Saber: Vertical/Diagonal 8

Entry (up & back, elbow high)
Crossover (drop behind hip, edge leading)
Exit (edge slices up & forward)
  • Entry: High behind, edge leading
  • Crossover: Drop behind hip, edge leads
  • Exit: Edge slices up & forward, chest brakes

Power = 8 Size + Speed

Power 8 Size 8 Speed Brake Use Case
10% Tiny (grapefruit) Slow Soft Drop shot
30% Small (orange) Slow-med Gentle Angle/dink
50% Medium (basketball) Medium Medium Rally
70% Med-small Fast Firm Pressure
100% Small (grapefruit) Violent Hard Winner

Key insight: 100% is SMALLER than 50% — just faster, harder brake.

The Counter-Intuitive Truth

Look at the 100% trace. It's one of the smallest shapes — just the fastest and hardest-braked. Power was never about a bigger backswing.

The 8 Connects Everything

Variable How the 8 Regulates It
Q 8 keeps head still — hand draws 8, head is gimbal
V Smooth 8 = no head jerk = quiet VOR
ROOT 8 powered by root — feet push, hips turn, hand traces
F 8 keeps fabric tensioned — no slack at reversal
P You FEEL the 8 size — tiny = touch, violent = power
T 8 keeps tent tensioned — no slack = instant transfer
SSC Crossover = Amortization — keep it smooth <200ms
45° 8 lives ON the 45° glass plane
BRAKE Exit of 8 = brake point

The Drill

"Shadow 8s → Add Brake → Regulate"

  1. 20 continuous figure-8s, hand only, butt cap leading
  2. No pause anywhere in the path
  3. Add front-leg brake at exit
  4. Partner calls "20%, 50%, 100%" — same path, change size/speed
  5. If you pull racket way back for 100%, you've lost it — big takeback = slow 8

The Cue

"Small 8, hard brake. One-inch pulse. Power was never a bigger backswing."
