Serve

Isolated Kinetic Chain.

The Serve Is Different

The only shot you control completely. No opponent's ball to read — just a pure kinetic chain running from ground to hand.

The Serve CORE Map

Variable Serve Implementation
Q Eyes on toss contact zone, never the opponent. Park at peak of toss.
V Head stays still throughout. Chin tucked. No peeking at target.
ROOT Platform: both feet screw in. Pinpoint: back foot drives, front foot brakes.
8 Vertical 8: racket drops behind back, crosses over, exits up-forward.
45° 45° diagonal: drops low behind, drives up through ball.
BRAKE Front hip/leg brakes hard. Torso stops. Arm whips.
PULSE 1-inch pronation snap at contact. Never a long swing.
JIN Ting feels stretch. Hua = N/A (you create the energy). Fa = explosive pronation.

Kibler 6-Stage Model (Mapped)

Stage Name Key Action Serve-Specific
1 Wind-up Stance, grip, initial weight shift Continental grip, platform or pinpoint
2 Early cocking Pelvis/trunk rotation begins Hip rotation starts before arm moves
3 Late cocking Max external rotation (MER) Elbow 90°, shoulder max ER — trophy position
4 Acceleration IR + elbow extension Racket drops behind back, whips upward
5 Deceleration Eccentric control Post-contact control prevents injury
6 Follow-through Chain finishes Racket across body, weight forward

The Serve Q-V-ROOT-8-45-Impulse Map

Variable Serve Implementation
Q Eyes on toss contact zone, never opponent. Park at toss peak.
V Head still, chin tucked. No peek.
ROOT Platform: both feet screw. Pinpoint: back drives, front brakes.
8 Vertical 8: drop behind back, crossover, exit up-forward.
45° 45° diagonal: drop low behind, drive up through ball.
BRAKE Front hip/leg brakes hard. Torso stops. Arm whips.
PULSE 1-inch pronation snap. Never long swing.
JIN Ting feels stretch. Hua = N/A (you create energy). Fa = explosive pronation.

Trophy Position: The Load

  • Elbow at shoulder height or slightly above, 90°
  • Racket points up, edge up — never back
  • Shoulders tilted, hitting shoulder higher than toss shoulder
  • Hip rotated, trunk coiled, loading spiral line
  • Toss arm extended upward, pointing at ball, counter-balance

Coach's Note: The trophy position isn't a pose. It's the SSC load. If you don't feel a stretch in chest, lat, and shoulder at trophy, you're not loaded. No load = no SSC = no power.

Acceleration: The One-Inch Pulse

  • Racket drops behind back from gravity + trunk rotation — never muscle it down
  • Front leg/hip brakes hard, torso stops
  • Arm whips: shoulder IR + elbow extension + pronation
  • Contact: slightly in front, to the right, above head. Pronation peaks EXACTLY at contact.
  • Feel: 1-inch pulse. Never a long swing — brake, then snap.

Serve Types: Same Chain, Different Face

Serve Toss Position Racket Path Face at Contact Key Feeling
Flat Slightly right, inside baseline Straight up at 45° Perpendicular to target Hit through back of ball
Slice Further right, wider Outside-in across ball Open 10-15°, carving Brush outside of ball
Kick Above head, slightly left Low to high, 7→1 o'clock Closed, brushing up Brush up back of ball

Same trophy. Same chain. Only toss and path change.

Fault Signals

Symptom Root Cause Fix
Long Toss low/behind, face opens Toss higher & inside, close face
Net Toss high/left, face closes Toss further right, open face
Wide Body opened early, no brake Front hip brakes, stay side-on
No power No SSC load at trophy Feel stretch in chest/lat at trophy
Shoulder pain Muscled racket drop Let gravity + trunk drop racket

Pre-Serve Routine (Q-V-ROOT Integration)

  1. Feet to ground: platform or pinpoint set, tripods active, feel screw
  2. Head to still: chin tucked, eyes on toss contact zone
  3. Hands to 3/10: continental, loose wrist, ball in fingertips
  4. Breathe to center: two slow breaths, vestibular calms
  5. Toss to load: toss triggers coiling, hips turn, trunk tilts, feel stretch
  6. Trophy to brake to pulse: see contact point, brake hip, snap pronation

The Serve Checklist

  • Stance: platform or pinpoint, tripods active
  • Grip: continental, loose wrist, 3/10
  • Toss: inside baseline, right of head, peaks 6" above contact
  • Trophy: elbow up, racket edge up, shoulders tilted, feel stretch
  • Brake: front hip/leg stops hard, torso stops
  • Pulse: pronation snaps at contact, 1 inch, never a swing
  • Head: still, eyes on contact, no peek
  • Finish: racket across body, weight forward, balanced
