Return of Serve

Hua Jin — Absorb & Redirect.

The Return Philosophy

The return is not a groundstroke. It's a block/redirect using the opponent's pace. Short takeback, firm face, pulse through.

The Return CORE Map

Variable Return Implementation
Q Eyes on opponent's contact point, then JUMP to your contact zone
V Head still, no peek. Chin tucked.
ROOT Wide base, both feet Thực. Weight drops forward.
8 Tiny 8. Micro-movement. Racket never goes behind you.
45° Face angle adjusts for spin. Block = 45° face.
BRAKE Front foot stomps. Torso stops. Hands pulse.
PULSE 1-inch block/push. Never swing.
JIN Hua dominant — absorb pace, redirect. Ting feels spin. Fa = firm pulse.

The Critical Difference

Groundstroke Return of Serve
You create pace You use their pace
Long 8 for power Tiny 8 — racket stays in front
Full coil Mini-coil, hands stay central
Swing through Block & pulse
Time to load 0.4-0.6 seconds total

Load Phase: As Server Swings

Element Detail
Eyes On server's contact point (Q)
Feet Wide, athletic. Both tripods active. Both legs Thực — coiled spring.
Hands Continental or slight eastern. Racket up and in front — throat height.
Body Slight knee bend. Hip hinge. Ready to drop weight forward.

Coach's Note: If your racket goes behind you on a 120mph serve, you're late. Period. Keep it in front.

Park Phase: At Server's Contact

Element Detail
Head Freezes. Dead still.
Eyes Jump from server's contact → YOUR contact zone instantly. Say "park."
Weight Begins shifting forward as ball leaves their strings.

Execution: The Block-Pulse

Phase Action Feeling
1. Read See spin/speed in 50ms "Fast flat / Heavy kick / Slice wide"
2. Face Adjust face angle before ball arrives Slice → close face. Kick → open face. Flat → neutral.
3. Meet Step forward, racket meets ball in front "Catch it early. Don't let it push you back."
4. Brake Front foot stomps, torso stops Sudden hardness
5. Pulse Hands push 1 inch through Firm wrists, no swing

Return Types by Serve

Serve Type Face Adjustment Pulse Direction Key Thought
Flat T Neutral, slight close Straight through "Block through middle"
Flat Wide Slight open Redirect crosscourt "Angle it back"
Kick Open 10-15° Up & through "Ride the wave up"
Slice Close 10-15° Down & through "Cut under it"
Body Neutral Straight back "Get hips out of way"

Fault Signals

Symptom Root Cause Fix

Floats long Face opened on fast ball Close face pre-contact
Into net Didn't open for kick Open face pre-contact
Weak block No brake, no pulse Front foot stomp, 1-inch push
Shanks Head moved, eyes left Park at server contact, hold
