Central Governor Model¶
Central Governor Model là framework neurophysiological giải thích cơ chế fatigue: CNS (không phải cơ bắp) là cơ quan quyết định cuối cùng về mức nỗ lực mà body có thể duy trì. Fatigue không phải là peripheral failure của cơ bắp — mà là regulatory decision của CNS để protect homeostasis.

CNS Là "Safety Governor"¶
Central Governor (được đề xuất bởi Tim Noakes) hoạt động như một regulatory system: - Monitor toàn bộ physiological state: temperature, pH, electrolyte levels, fuel availability, structural integrity. - So sánh current state với threshold limits — điểm mà tổn hại irreversible có thể xảy ra. - Khi approaching limits → reduce motor unit recruitment — không phải conscious decision, mà là automatic CNS throttling. - Player experience: "My body won't do what I'm telling it to."

Conditioning The Central Governor¶
Traditional conditioning raises physical capacity — muscles can produce more force, aerobic system delivers more oxygen. Central Governor conditioning raises the tolerance ceiling — CNS permits higher sustained output before throttling.
Methods:¶
- Neural Pressure Training: Stress CNS beyond physical fatigue regularly → Governor adapts upward.
- Deliberate practice under fatigue: Execute technical work when partially fatigued → Governor learns that motor program execution under fatigue is survivable, not dangerous.
- Myelination of motor programs: Deeply myelinated engrams require less CNS monitoring to execute → less Governor activation needed → more capacity available before throttling begins.
"Mutual Suffering" — The Competitive Implication¶
In a third-set tiebreak, both players are operating near their Governor ceiling. The player who has conditioned their Governor to a higher tolerance ceiling will: - Maintain technique longer before breakdown. - Make fewer unforced errors under fatigue. - Execute explosive efforts more reliably.
They don't need to feel better than their opponent — they just need to degrade slower.
Sleep — Primary Governor Recovery¶
Sleep is the primary recovery mechanism for Central Governor function: - Slow-wave sleep: Clears metabolic waste from neural tissue. - REM sleep: Consolidates motor engrams (memory consolidation → more efficient Governor monitoring of myelinated programs). - Sleep deprivation → Governor ceiling drops → performance throttled at lower intensity than normal.
Coaching implication: Sleep management is conditioning management. A player sleeping 6 hours is playing with a lower Governor ceiling than when sleeping 9 hours — regardless of physical training state.
