A COMPREHENSIVE CHARTING SYSTEM
By Josef Brabenec (Former Canadian National Coach)
This new charting system is based on a simple fact that any uneven rally in a match
represents a point for the server while any even rally represents a point for the
receiver.
Let us go step by step on how to fill in the charting sheet.
1. In the first column you put the initials of the server.
2. In the second column you mark how many good shots are in each rally and
you put down a final number
3. In the third column (stroke) you mark the type of the final stroke in every
rally.
4. In the following two columns "point for" you mark if the final stroke was a
winner or an error either of the server or the receiver.
5. When a game is finished you put down the total number of points played,
the total number of rallies within a game and you count the winners and
errors in that game. When a game is finished you underline all six columns
and you start charting the new game.
6. If you want to keep track of important points (break or game points) you may
mark them in the column of each player's initials.
7. The dot in front of the number of rallies indicates that the server missed the
first serve, which gives you the percentage of the use of first serves.
8. At the end of the match, you will fill in the charting summary starting with
the total number of points played, followed by the total number of rallies
and the total number of winners and errors.
9. Then you go carefully through your match chart and you put down in the
column of total points in the match on the charting summary sheet how
many points were finished by double faults, aces, returns or by 3rd, 4th, 5th
shots, etc., in a rally. They you sort out all winners and errors and mark
them properly in the columns of the individual players, by sets and finally in
a complete match. This will give you a complete picture of what happened in
a match.
10. To get the total number of points won by a player you combine his total
number of winners with the total number of errors of his opponent.
11. On a summary of a match chart, the 1st shot is always a serve and the 2nd
shot is always a return.
12. Following the record of your charting sheet you can easily determine the
percentage of points won on first and second serves of both players.
13. It is very important to summarise the points finished after 4 shot rallies, 6
shot rallies and longer than 10 shots rallies in order to determine the
player's concept of the game and his best efficiency or weakness, to
eventually adjust the practice.
14. To get exact information about the efficiency of the strokes of a player you
have to fill the strokes summary chart which will indicate you where are your
player's weaknesses and where are his strong points.
A COMPREHENSIVE CHARTING SYSTEM 1
By Josef Brabenec (Former Canadian National Coach)
This charting system gives you an exact sequence of all the points played in a
match. To obtain a justifiable picture of the game concept and stroke efficiency
of a player you should chart at least 10-12 of his tournament matches.
