Patrick's Acknowledgments
Little did I know that the single m ost trying tim e of m y professional tennis
career would turn out to be the impetus behind a w hole new w orld of oppor
tunity. In th e sp rin g o f 1996,1had th e first o f tw o sh ou ld er surgeries, w h ich
meant no tennis for m e -- at least for a while. During m y recovery, I had m y
first opportu n ity to be a full-time com m entator for ESPN. I couldn't m ove my
arm at all, but m y mouth still w orked. I red iscovered h ow much I lo ve this
game. N ot just the playing, but the watching, learning, and the history.
All o f th ese ex p erien ces led m e to the idea for a book. Then Tennis F or
D u m m ies cam e along, thanks in part to m y hard-w orking agents at IMG w h o
w ere tired of m y pestering. I jum ped at the chance to w rite this book.
But hey, I'm no writer, and so I corralled m y friend Peter Bodo to help me
out. N eed less to say, I could not h ave d on e it w ithout him. Peter, I h ope you
e n jo y e d ou r m arathon session s in the W est V illage as m uch as I did. And
Joel Drucker, the Technical Editor, took our text and ch ecked to make sure
that w e had all the facts straight. Joel -- are you sure the down-the-line
approach is still th e best?
M y passion for tennis has always been a part of me. I w ould not have been
able to fuel that passion w ithout the support m y parents Kay and John have
given m e o ver the years. From driving m e to countless junior tournam ents
weekend after w eekend to rem inding m e to follow m y heart -- I thank you
M om and Dad.
To m y brothers Mark and John for spurring me on and showing me the way.
And for giving me lots of hand-me-downs (including racquets)!
Thanks also to m y colleagues Cliff Drysdale and Fred Stalle w ho w elcom ed
m e with open arms. T h ey continue to teach m e so much about this beautiful
gam e and its traditions.
A special thanks to the wom an of m y dream s, m y wife-to-be, M elissa. Thank
you for helping me look behind all th ose d oors and find so m any great
surprises.
A t IDG B ooks W o rld w id e , Inc., I thank S ta cy C ollins fo r h elp in g m ake this
project possible; M ary G oodw in for dealing with my pages o f barely deci
ph erable print; Joe Jansen, Kel Oliver, and Tina Sims for m aking the text
sou n d s o great; and all th e folks d o w n in p ro d u c tio n w h o m a d e th e te x t and
illustrations really shine.
Peter's Acknowledgments
T w o su ccessive ed itors at Tennis m agazine, Donna D oh erty and Mark
W oodruff, graciously allow ed m e to w ork on this book w hile I m aintained m y
watch at the m agazine. Invariably, w riting a book takes m ore tim e and effort
than you anticipate, and I thank them for their patience. I w orked side-by-
sid e in th e p ress ro o m s o f th e w o rld w ith D onna fo r th e b e tte r p art o f 20
years. T h ey w ere v e ry good years indeed.
I first got to know Patrick M cEnroe w hen he w as a rookie on the pro tour. By
then, I knew Pat's o ld er broth er John p retty w ell. So w hen Pat arrived on the
sc e n e in 1988, w ith o u t tw o nickels to rub togeth er, I figu red th e least I cou ld
d o w as take th e kid (an d his d ou b les partner, Jim G rab b ) out to dinner,
w hich was the beginning of a great friendship. I'v e never w orked with
anyone m ore understanding and even-tem pered than Pat McEnroe. He
helped make w ritin g this book a real pleasure.
M a ry G ood w in o f IDG B ooks W o rld w id e, m y sp len d id p ro je c t editor, w o rk ed
indefatigably to turn m y prose into clear and readable English. She con
stantly played coach and ch eerleader to m y Grum py Old Man, and I'm still
w aiting for her to sh ow even the m erest flash of im patience, exasperation, or
frustration w ith m y w rite rly tem peram ent. M a ry's a cham p, even if she still
isn't entirely con vin ced that a court can be soft and fast at the sam e time.
Joel Drucker, our Technical Editor on this project, perform ed m agnificently.
He is on e o f th o se rare p e o p le w h o se absolu te passion for tennis is m atched
by a form idably clear and com prehensive know ledge of the gam e at every
level -- from theories of stringing tension to the strategies em ployed by the
v e r y best p la yers in th e gam e today.
I w ou ld also like to thank fe llo w journalist S teve Flink, P age Crosland and
Randy W alker of the USTA, Joe Lynch, Greg Sharko and M ickey Singh o f the
A TP Tour, and Barbara T ra vers o f th e ITF for th eir h elp in com p ilin g so m e of
